The coefficient of thermal expansion of quartz glass is extremely small—only one-twelfth to one-twentieth of ordinary glass. Standard specifications stipulate that after the specimen is heated to 1200 degrees Celsius and rapidly quenched into cold water, it will not crack or burst over three consecutive cycles.
